When you work hard everyday, when your birthday rolls around you deserve to at the very least eat well. Especially when your life’s work is growing the best food around. Michael’s birthday is in May, and we made a feast fit for a king, but without the kingly costs. We do love to go out on occasion, and we are lucky to have some great restaurants around us too. But with food costs rising, and eateries cutting corners because of those costs, having a birthday feast at home is affordable and very delicious.
The Myth of Expensive Farm Food
There’s a common misconception that eating locally sourced, farm-fresh food is a luxury that comes with a hefty price tag. However, what I made for Michael’s birthday dinner shows that this couldn’t be further from the truth. With a bit of planning, you can enjoy high-quality, nutritious meals without breaking the bank.
Michael’s Birthday Feast: The Delicious Details
I’m a busy woman, so most dinners must reflect my limited time. It’s a lot of ground beef, roast chickens, and simple veggies. But I was making a birthday feast, so I wanted to kick it up a bit. Thankfully we keep a freezer stocked with various cuts of meat, so I really just had to shop my freezer.
- Whole Beef Filet: $10.99 – Thanks to bulk purchasing of beef via a half or quarter cow, access to a variety of cuts, including steaks and filets, at great prices was easy.
- Asparagus: $6.00 – Fresh, locally grown, and full of flavor – I roasted them until tender.
- Potatoes: $6.00 – Perfectly roasted and sourced from the Farm On Central.
- Salad: $5.00 – Crisp, fresh greens and veggies also grown right here at the Farm On Central.
Total: $28.00
For just $28, we fed a family of five with a meal that would easily cost four times as much at any local restaurant.
Creating a Memorable Family Feast
One of the greatest joys of farm-to-table dining is the experience of sharing a meal with loved ones. Michael’s birthday dinner wasn’t just about the food; it was about the memories created around the table. I enjoyed preparing the meal with the kids’ help, and the kids loved eating it too, proving that farm-fresh food can be both delicious and fun for the whole family. And when food is local, it’s fresher, and when it’s fresher, it’s better tasting. Meaning, you don’t have to be a gourmet cook to make a lovely meal.
Additional Benefits of Eating Locally Sourced Meals
- Quality and Freshness: Locally sourced food is fresher and of higher quality because it doesn’t have to travel long distances.
- Supporting Local Farmers: When you buy local, you support family-owned farms like the Farm On Central, helping to sustain the local economy and agricultural diversity.
- Environmental Impact: Eating locally reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting food over long distances.
- Nutritional Value: Freshly harvested produce retains more nutrients, making it a healthier choice for your family.
