Gardening Tips From Farm On Central

Whether you’re just starting out with a raised bed in your backyard or you’ve been gardening for years, there’s always something new to learn from the land. At The Farm On Central, we grow with nature—not against it. And as a regenerative farm, we believe in nurturing the soil, not stripping it. That’s why we’re sharing some of our tried-and-true gardening practices that actually build up your garden over time, not wear it out.

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed or unsure about how to get started with more natural practices, take a deep breath—you’re in the right place. These are simple steps you can take to grow healthier, more resilient plants while supporting your soil, your family, and the planet. Let’s dig in.

1. Feed the Soil, Not Just the Plant

In conventional gardening, it’s common to throw on synthetic fertilizer and hope for the best. But here’s the truth: healthy plants start with healthy soil.

💡 Our Tip: Instead of feeding plants directly, focus on building up your soil life. Add compost, aged manure, or worm castings regularly. Even a light mulch of grass clippings or leaves can do wonders. It’s like giving your soil a balanced diet—no mystery chemicals needed.

2. Cover That Ground! Bare Soil is a Missed Opportunity

On our farm, you’ll rarely see bare dirt. Nature doesn’t like naked soil—and neither should you. Bare ground gets compacted, dries out faster, and invites weeds.

💡 Our Tip: Mulch like it matters (because it does). Use straw, leaves, grass clippings, or even wood chips. Not only will it reduce weeds, but it’ll keep moisture in, feed soil organisms, and slowly break down into nutrients.

3. Plant a Diversity of Crops

Monocropping (growing just one thing over and over) might seem tidy, but it’s tough on soil and invites pests.

💡 Our Tip: Mix it up! Grow different types of plants in the same bed and rotate what you plant each year. Interplanting herbs like basil, dill, or marigolds between your veggies can attract pollinators and deter pests naturally. Think of it as creating a little ecosystem in your garden.

4. Skip the Synthetic Stuff

We don’t use harsh chemicals at The Farm On Central—because they don’t just kill pests; they also disrupt soil life and harm pollinators.

💡 Our Tip: Look for natural ways to manage problems. For example, neem oil and insecticidal soaps can be used carefully when pests get out of hand. But prevention is best—healthy soil grows healthy plants that naturally resist disease.

5. Compost

If you’re not composting yet, this is your sign to start. It’s free, it reduces your waste, and your garden will thank you.

💡 Our Tip: Even a simple backyard pile of kitchen scraps, leaves, and grass clippings can turn into a beautiful soil amendment. Just keep meat and dairy out, and turn it every week or so. Don’t overthink it—nature knows what to do.

6. Work With the Seasons, Not Against Them

One of the best things you can do is pay attention to your land. The seasons teach us when to sow, when to rest, and when to harvest.

💡 Our Tip: Start seeds early indoors or direct sow cold-hardy crops like kale and spinach in early spring. In the fall, plant garlic or cover crops like clover or rye to protect and build soil over winter.

7. Don’t Fight the Weeds, Outgrow Them

Weeds are a symptom, not a cause. Instead of reaching for weed killer, think about why they’re thriving.

💡 Our Tip: Densely plant your garden beds so weeds have less room to grow. Use cover crops in the off-season. And always mulch! If you treat the soil well, eventually, the weeds stop showing up as much.

Remember: healthy food starts in healthy soil.

And soil health starts with you.
