Remember sitting in elementary school, staring at that colorful triangle plastered on the wall? The one that told us to eat 6-11 servings of bread, cereal, and pasta every day? Well, it turns out that the food pyramid we all grew up with was about as scientifically sound as using leeches to cure the common cold.
That’s right, our trusted USDA food pyramid was more fiction than fact. And we’ve been paying the price ever since with skyrocketing rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. It’s time to face the music – we’ve been duped, swindled, and led down the garden path by Big Agriculture and their lobbyist cronies.
The Grain Drain
Let’s start at the base of this nutritional house of cards. Why on earth were we told to eat so many carbs? Well, it wasn’t because pasta and Wonder Bread are superfoods. Nope, it was because the wheat and corn industries had the USDA wrapped around their little finger [1].

As Luise Light, the USDA nutritionist who created the original food pyramid, later revealed:
“The USDA altered wording to emphasize processed foods over fresh and whole foods, to downplay lean meats and low-fat dairy choices because the meat and milk lobbies believed it’d hurt sales of full-fat products; it also hugely increased the servings of wheat and other grains to make the wheat growers happy [2].”
Well, butter my sourdough bagel, who would have guessed?

Milking It for All It’s Worth
And let’s not forget that big white spot on the pyramid. You know, the one telling us to guzzle milk like there’s no tomorrow? Turns out the dairy industry was more than happy to pull the udders over our eyes, too [3].
Never mind how this affects the population that is lactose intolerant or that you can get calcium from leafy greens without all the saturated fat. Nope, Big Dairy made sure we’d keep chugging the milk well into adulthood.
But here’s where it gets interesting. While the food pyramid pushed processed, homogenized milk, it completely ignored the potential benefits of raw milk, villainizing raw milk to the extreme. Early studies showed that raw milk was superior to pasteurized milk in protecting against infection, diarrhea, rickets, tooth decay, and tuberculosis [4].
And let’s talk about A2 milk. This isn’t just another dairy industry gimmick. A2 milk comes from cows that produce only the A2 type of beta-casein protein. Some studies show that A2 milk is easier to digest and could reduce discomfort in people who struggle with regular milk [5]. It’s like nature’s way of saying, “Hey, maybe not all milk is created equal!”
The Protein Predicament
Now, I’m not here to tell you to swear off all animal products. But there’s no denying that the conventional meat and dairy industries had their greasy fingers all over that pyramid, too [6].
By lumping all proteins together and recommending daily servings, the USDA conveniently ignored the health benefits of grass-fed proteins. It’s almost like they cared more about keeping farmers operating CAFOs (confined animal feeding operations) happy than what actual nutrition facts show.

Time to Flip the Pyramid
So what’s a health-conscious Ohioan to do? Well, for starters, we can stop treating the food pyramid like gospel. Instead, let’s use some good old-fashioned common sense:
- Eat more vegetables than anything else. Yes, even more than bread. I know, a revolutionary concept.
- Choose whole grains over processed junk. Your great-grandparents didn’t eat Froot Loops, and neither should you.
- Get your protein from a variety of sources. Beans, nuts, eggs, and responsibly raised meat ALL have a place at the table [7].
- Enjoy dairy (especially raw) if you tolerate it (or try A2A2 if not). But don’t feel like you need to chug a gallon a day to have strong bones. We have a variety of sources to consume calcium.
- Focus on whole, minimally processed foods. If it comes in a box with a cartoon character on it, put it back on the shelf.

Here at Farm On Central, we’re committed to providing our community with honest, nutritious food that doesn’t require a lobbying team to sell. From our locally sourced, pasture-raised eggs to our non-toxic produce, we’re all about real food for real people.
Our farm store is bursting with fresh, locally grown vegetables that put those processed grains to shame. And let’s not forget our farm-fresh salad—so good, it’ll make you wonder why the food pyramid didn’t have a separate category just for it!

So the next time you see the food pyramid, give it a wink and a nod. Then, head on over to our farm store and load up on the good stuff. Because instead of a food pyramid, we understand that every meal should include local vegetables free from sprays, grass-fed/pasture raised proteins, some fermented vegetables or dairy or grains. Leave the processed sugar, grains, and inflammatory seed oils alone.
Because at the end of the day, the best nutrition advice might just be what your grandma always said: “Eat your vegetables, and everything else in moderation.”
Turns out, she was a lot smarter than the USDA all along [8].
See you at the farm!
